Bras as tops are a red-carpet trick, not a wardrobe plan

Rosalía, Tyla and Kaia Gerber make underwear-as-outerwear look easy, but the magic is in the tailoring and the stylist. Borrow the layering, skip the literalism.

Can a piece of underwear become a serious outfit just because a famous person says so? On the red carpet, apparently yes. In your actual Tuesday, the answer is a lot more complicated.

The bra top is having its moment. As WWD reports, Rosalía wore a Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann look at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami. It paired a strapless evening top with molded cups with a double-breasted tuxedo jacket and a flared silk skirt. The same night, Becky G wore a red bra top with a fringed low-rise skirt. WWD also lists Tyla, Kristen Stewart, Kaia Gerber, Rihanna and Anya Taylor-Joy among the trend's wearers, and notes that Carolina Herrera, Bottega Veneta and Dior put the silhouette on their spring 2027 runways.

The bra is the easy part; the tuxedo is doing the work

Look closely at Rosalía's outfit. The "bra top" is one of three pieces, and the other two are a sharp wool jacket with peak lapels and a bias-cut skirt with structural draping. The bra is the punchline, and the tailoring is the setup. Remove the jacket and you don't have a daring look anymore. You have underwear.

That is our main objection to the "just wear your bralette as a top" framing. It treats the garment as the idea, when the idea is the contrast. Even Aerie, a brand with every commercial reason to tell you to take the bralette out of the drawer, says in its styling guide that the principle is pairing something soft or lacy with something structured, like leather or suiting. We think that is the most honest sentence in the whole genre. The trend works through contrast, and contrast takes some effort to pull off.

Red carpets are a controlled environment, and your commute isn't

A celebrity bra top comes with a stylist (Rosalía often works with Jose Carayol, per WWD) and, we'd assume, a fitting and a designer who built the top to be seen. In Rosalía's case the cups are molded and the fabric is duchesse silk. None of that describes the lace bralette you bought for wearing under a shirt.

There's also a small irony. Many of these stars are wearing spring 2027 runway designs in the fall. It looks to us like the "trend" is partly a preview, and we'd bet most of the copycat versions will skip the part that mattered, the construction.

None of this makes the idea unwearable. It makes the literal version a high-maintenance one: coverage, support, and an outfit around it that looks deliberate rather than accidental. Aerie itself says structure and coverage matter as much as comfort, which is a polite way of saying not every bralette is ready for daylight.

Take the layering, skip the literalism

The version of this trend that survives contact with real life is layering. A black lace bra peeking out from under a plunging blazer is the look InStyle described on Kaia Gerber back in April. It is the same logic as Rosalía's: something intimate, something sharp over it. You get the wink without the exposure.

Practical version, as our opinion rather than a rule:

  • Put the bralette under an open jacket or blazer, not alone.
  • Choose high-waisted, structured bottoms so the proportions look intentional.
  • Treat Aerie's test with caution. The brand says that if you'd wear a bralette under a sheer top, it's ready to be a standalone top. We'd say that's the optimistic reading, and that a bit of visibility under a jacket is the safer first step.

It's also worth noting how old this idea is. Kaia Gerber was wearing a pearl-embellished bra over a lace skirt to a fashion awards event back in 2019, according to Vogue. This looks like a cycle, not a revolution, and cycles reward the patient.

Our verdict: enjoy the red-carpet version as the costume it is, and don't read it as a shopping list. If you want in, buy the blazer, not the bra. The bra was probably already in your drawer, and it works best when it's the secret that the rest of your outfit is keeping.
